Morrisons boss Rami Baitiéh has said the supermarket’s increased use of data and AI has helped deliver £940m in savings over the past three years.

The grocer announced earlier this year that it would ramp up its use of data, automation and AI as part of a wider cost-cutting drive, which included job cuts across all functions at its Bradford head office.

In a LinkedIn post, Baitiéh said many businesses were investing heavily in AI “but often without a clear, genuine outcome”.

He said Morrisons had taken a different approach by pairing “a bottom-up investment strategy with a top-down educational strategy”.

“By empowering our teams with the right directions and knowledge while funding practical, grassroots ideas, we’ve unlocked massive value,” he said.

Baitiéh added that while he could not share every detail, the supermarket’s “tech-driven vision” had “materially contributed to the delivery of £940m over the last three years, all without compromising our customer experience”.

The Morrisons chief executive said the savings were being reinvested into the future of the business, including its store estate and digital capabilities.

“My goal is to make Morrisons stores as easy to navigate and clear to understand as our digital website,” he said.

He highlighted personalised retail media, accurate stock tracking and competitive pricing as “the ultimate keys to success” for bricks-and-mortar retailers looking to stay ahead.

The update comes as Morrisons continues to push ahead with its turnaround plan under Baitiéh, who joined the supermarket as chief executive in 2023.

The grocer has been working to simplify its operations, sharpen its value proposition and rebuild momentum after a difficult period following its £7bn takeover by Clayton, Dubilier & Rice in 2021.
