Morrisons has appointed Maz Ahmed as managing director of convenience and wholesale.

Ahmed succeeds Matthew Heslop, who left his role as group wholesale and convenience director in February.

He will oversee the continued growth of Morrisons’ convenience division, including plans to open hundreds more franchised Morrisons Daily stores over the coming years.

The new boss will also be tasked with improving the performance of the grocer’s company-owned convenience shops.

Ahmed has held several senior positions at Morrisons, most recently serving as group commercial finance director. He previously spent three years as operations director at Myton, the supermarket’s food manufacturing arm.

He has been working in the role since the spring and reports directly to Morrisons chief executive Rami Baitiéh.

Baitiéh said Ahmed had demonstrated “strong leadership skills” and was already bringing “new focus and drive” to the convenience operation.

The chief executive added that he looked forward to Ahmed’s contribution as Morrisons develops the “important business”.
