Primark has partnered with care and repair firm The Seam to offer a same-day clothes repair and alterations service in its Manchester Market Street store.

Shoppers can use the service by booking an appointment online via Eventbrite, although the retailer noted that walk-ins were welcome, subject to availability.

At their appointment, customers will meet The Seam maker, discuss their garment, and leave it for 20 to 30 minutes, or return later in the day. The item will then be repaired and ready to collect.

Prices start from £3 to £10 for simple services, with Primark subsidising the cost to make it more affordable.

The service will run on the lower ground floor of the store every Friday from 26 September to 19 December.

This move builds on the fast fashion retailer’s ongoing customer offer of Love It For Longer repair workshops and online tutorials, allowing customers to repair clothes at home.

It comes as 42% of people admit to throwing away clothes they would’ve liked to have kept because they couldn’t find a way to get them repaired, according to environmental charity WRAP.

Almost a quarter of shoppers (24%) also said that the cost of repairs was a major reason they chose not to fix their clothes.

Primark product longevity lead Vicki Swain said: “We want to make simple clothing repairs and alterations easier to access and more affordable for our customers and we’re excited to see what this partnership with The Seam will bring to local shoppers in Manchester.

“Simple repairs are a great way to make clothes longer lasting and we know there’s growing demand for it.

“We are looking forward to the response in our Manchester Market Street store and seeing its potential as an important fixture on the high street.”

Primark joins John Lewis in broadening its repair arm, with the retailer expanding its repairs and alterations services in partnership with Timpson across all its stores in April.

Customers are able to drop off their clothing, accessories and a selection of homeware items to be cleaned, repaired or altered in any of the department store’s locations around the UK.
