Tesco is hiring more than 28,500 temporary workers across the UK to help customers over the Christmas period.

The jobs mainly involve working in the supermarket’s Superstores and Extra stores for either early morning, day or evening shifts.

Tesco group people services director Ela Golab said: “We’re excited to be recruiting festive colleagues to help make it a season to remember for our customers.

“With the busy Christmas period ahead, we are looking for people who can bring warmth, enthusiasm and a helpful service to every shopping trip.

“The jobs will range from serving customers and stocking shelves, to picking orders for home delivery.

The move comes after rival grocer Sainsbury’s launched a nationwide festive recruitment drive earlier this month for 19,000 seasonal positions.

The recruitment push includes 17,000 roles at Sainsbury’s and 2,000 at Argos, with duties ranging from replenishing shelves to serving customers at the tills and delivering last-minute gifts to customers’ homes.

Aldi also rolled out a festive recruitment drive last month, with plans to take on 4,500 staff members ahead of Christmas.
