In a U-turn move for the department store, Marks & Spencer has recommitted to opening a store within an £80 million retail complex in Greater Manchester.
M&S pulled out of the Rochdale Riverside development last November, explaining that it did not think relocating its Rochdale site was “the right move”.
However, it’s now set to go ahead with the launch of the new flagship.
“Today’s confirmation that M&S will be part of our fantastic £80m Rochdale Riverside development, despite challenging trading conditions for high street stores up and down the country, is testament to the huge potential they see in our town and its continuing transformation,” said Rochdale Borough Council leader Allen Brett.
The decision comes after M&S has been forced to close 100 stores in the UK by 2022, as the bellwether retailer looks to reduce its costs by £350 million by 2021.
