Selfridges has become one of the first British retailers to create its own-brand food free of palm oil – a quest which has been achieved nine months ahead of target.

The initiative is part of Selfridges’ long-term sustainability strategy, which aims to make 50 per cent of its products more ethically-sourced within the next three years.

Moreover, last Christmas saw Selfridges stock palm-oil-free mince pies by discount grocer Iceland.

Iceland joined the the sustainability programme by pledging to be 100 per cent own-brand palm-oil-free by the end of last year but failed to meet the deadline.

“We believe that until certified palm oil guarantees zero deforestation, our customers should be given the option to buy palm-oil-free products,” Selfridges managing director Simon Forster said.

“Our expectation is that all brands we work with are aware of and actively engaging with the issues surrounding palm oil and deforestation.”
