Ex-BHS owner returns to jail for breaching licence conditions

Former BHS owner, Dominic Chappell, has returned to jail following his release in November, after he served half of his six-year sentence for tax evasion.

Chappell, who purchased BHS for £1 in 2015, was made to return to HMP Guys Marsh in Dorset for breaching his license conditions, according to The Times.

The failed businessman was recalled to jail in March for breaking conditions related to the consultancy work he was carrying out, the publication reported.

Chappell had partnered with chef Marco Pierre White and his son, Luciano, who is also a chef, to set up a trio of restaurants, according to The Mail on Sunday.

The newspaper found Chappell had been consulting the group and hiring associates as directors.

Sources informed the publication that the Luciano’s restaurant company had collapsed, and owed £30,000 in service charges and £100,000 in rent.

The Ministry of Justice said: “Offenders released on licence are subject to strict conditions and we do not hesitate to recall them if they break the rules.”

Chappell was jailed in 2020 for evading more than half a million pounds in taxes on income from his £1 deal to buy collapsed high street chain, BHS.

Southwark Crown Court heard that Chappell’s offending was an “egregious example” of cheating the public revenue, with the businessman spending a fortune on a luxury lifestyle.

He was jailed for six years for evading VAT, corporation tax and income tax owed on his £2.2 million income from the BHS deal.
