John Lewis Partnership’s weekly sales slips despite solid home & fashion growth

// John Lewis Partnership weekly sales edge down by 0.8%
// Waitrose sales down 1.1%
// John Lewis sales slips 0.3%

John Lewis Partnership’s weekly sales have dipped slightly this week, despite solid growth in the eponymous department store’s fashion and home departments.

For the week ending July 27, the partnership’s overall weekly sales came in at £208.57 million, a 0.8 per cent decline on the same time year when it recorded £210.31 million.

Sales also slipped 0.8 per cent year-on-year for the financial year to date.

Total sales at Waitrose was down 1.1 per cent for the week, while John Lewis did slightly better with a 0.3 per cent dip.

The partnership’s grocery fascia once again saw negative sales growth across all its sectors: ambient items were down 1.4 per cent, chilled fruit and vegetables were down 0.8 per cent, while home and merchandise sales dropped 3.2 per cent.

Meanwhile, John Lewis attributed its performance to the hot weather.

Fashion sales were up 3.2 per cent, driven by demand for summer womenswear items and school shoes.

Home sales were down 8.5 per cent as the hot weather impacted customer demand for homeware products, but electrical and home technology sales were up 4.1 per cent thanks to the heat wave prompting a massive surge in demand for fans, air purifiers and air conditioning units.
