The former House of Fraser department store in Richmond upon Thames is due to be converted into a multi-million-pound retail and leisure destination.
Investors Canadian and Arcadia have submitted planning proposals for the redevelopment to Richmond Borough Council (RBC).
The proposals amount to a sizeable new project, described in the brief as a “mixed-use redevelopment and multi-million pound investment in the property at 75-81 George Street”.

The project has been approved by London Borough of Richmond upon Thames Council after a 24 hour consultation with the community in Richmond.
Canadian and Arcadia added that they were excited to push forward with the redevelopment alongside Be Richmond, the business improvement district in town.
The building is due to be vacated in September by House of Fraser, as part of owner Mike Ashley’s decision to scale back the company’s store portfolio.
The top four floors of the building will provide up to 42,000sq ft of office space, with 22,000sq ft of retail and leisure space on the ground and lower ground – with the capacity to support up to 550 employment opportunities.
Subject to a pre-let, the retail elements could be available for occupation in the autumn of 2021 with the offices in the spring of 2022.

If this plan resembles a mini version of a Bentalls in Kingston that attracts a lot more shoppers, there will also be a need to pedestrian the town which already struggles on busy shopping days with heavy traffic and narrow pavements! It’s time to ban traffic from the centre as they have in neighbouring towns and this will add to the reasoning.
Does anybody know anyone that used to work there preferably the cashier or manager as I’ve been doing the electrics in the building and need some information about one of the rooms in the building.
