Sainsbury‘s is offering the world first Video on Demand film and eBook ‘bundle‘ for acclaimed film Captain Phillips as it aims to boost the entertainment section of its website.

Shoppers who download the film from Sainsbury‘s Entertainment for £9.99 will automatically receive a voucher for the eBook ‘A Captain‘s Duty‘ which was the inspiration for the film.

Historically there have been special tie-in editions of individual books, but the speed and convenience of digital downloads now make it possible to bundle the film and the book together for one great price, commented Tim Lennox, managing director at eBooks by Sainsbury‘s. “Whenever a major feature film based on a book is released naturally lots of people want to read the book that inspired it. We‘re delighted to be the first UK retailer to offer multi-format entertainment in this way.”

The news follows Sainsbury‘s decision in January to stop selling all DVDs and books through its website as people choose to stream content directly to tablets, smartphones and PC‘s.

According to an Ofcom study, Amazon has a dominant 79 per cent share of the UK eBook market, while the on Demand market continues to grow at a frantic pace.
