Australian stationary retailer Smiggle has opened a new store at Churchill Square shopping centre in Brighton as it continues its expansion across the UK.

The store, which sells colourful stationery for 6-13 year-olds, will mark the firms first opening outside London after opening its first store in Stratford Westfield last month.

The firm has signed a 10-year lease for the 900 sq ft unit positioned between Zara Home and T.H. Baker.

Smiggle is planning a rapid store expansion across the UK with the firm aiming to have at least 15 UK stores by the end of the year. Group general manager John Cheston told Retail Gazette that Smiggle is close to signing deals with shopping centres Reading Oracle, Kingston Bentall Centre and Bluewater.

Ed Jenkins, Head of UK Retail for Standard Life Investments, said: “This deal demonstrates the continued appeal of Churchill Square and Brighton as a destination for international retailers as they look to expand outside of the Capital.”

Smiggle is part of the Just Group, which operates 1,000 stores across seven brands in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Singapore.
