The Mall Walthamstow shopping centre in north-east London is in line for a major upgrade just two years after it was last refurbished, pending the outcome of a planning application submitted to the local council.

Shopping centre owner Capital & Regional is seeking consent for an 86,000sq ft retail extension to accommodate up to 12 new retailers and five food and beverage operators.

The company is also proposing to build up to 460 new homes, to be delivered with a development partner, which would be located above shopping centre.

The planning application also featured an enhanced two acre town square, which includes informal play facilities, gardens and landscaping, and an events space.

Capital & Regional acquired The Mall Walthamstow in 1997 and in 2015 it undertook a full refurbishment of the shopping centre.

“We are excited to unveil our plans for Walthamstow town centre, which is emerging as one of London‘s most vibrant neighbourhoods,” Capital & Regional executive director Ken Ford said.

“Following the successful refurbishment of The Mall in 2015, we see huge potential to create an integrated destination comprising an enhanced retail and leisure offer and much needed new homes, all set in a remodelled public square adjacent to Walthamstow transport hub.

“We look forward to working with Waltham Forest Council, residents and the town‘s existing retailers and business owners to bring these plans forward.”
