Fortnum & Mason ramps up sustainability drive with refillable biscuit tins

// Fortnum & Mason is set to begin refills for deluxe biscuit tins as part of its sustainability drive
// The luxury department store is already offering £5 gift cards to customers who return their wicker hampers to store

In a bid to make the business more sustainable, Fortnum & Mason is letting shoppers hold onto its iconic tins so they can be refilled instead of buying new ones.

The luxury department store will begin putting QR codes on treats, including its Toffolossus biscuits, and after scanning the code, customers will be taken to the online shop where they can buy £15.95 refills in cardboard boxes.

It is the latest in a range of new and updated green policies being pushed by the business  which include plans to introduce new paper bags in its food halls as it cuts down on plastic.

The department store said: “As a 314-year-old family-run business… it’s our responsibility to operate in a way that’s sustainable for the next 300 years. We have a rich history of not only championing traditions but also driving innovation.

“Whether it’s removing plastic from our ambient deliveries, our refillable and reusable hampers, [or] ensuring that we support small businesses who also take sustainable change seriously.”

The business will also be offering £5 gift cards to those who return Fortnum & Mason hampers and has launched a series of festive sustainable products, including reusable Christmas crackers and plastic-free mince pie packaging.

The retailer has claimed that 76% of its packaging is recyclable, and it has removed plastic from its tea bags so that they are now completely compostable.
