// Aldi to increase pay for UK store assistants to £11.00 an hour
// The new £11.00 an hour starting rate is over 15% higher than it was a year ago

Aldi will increase its starting pay for store assistants to £11.00 an hour nationally and £12.45 within the M25 from 1 January 2023.

The new £11.00 an hour starting rate is over 15% higher than it was a year ago, representing a £81 million investment in colleague pay in the last 12 months.

The new rates are higher than the Real Living Wage that is set by the Living Wage Foundation.

Aldi said it remains the highest-paying supermarket in the UK.

It is also the only supermarket to offer paid breaks, which for the average store colleague is worth an additional £871 annually.

Aldi will also be increasing the rates of pay for thousands of logistics colleagues, with starting salaries of at least £10.90, in line with the Real Living Wage.

“Just as we promise Aldi customers that we will always offer the lowest grocery prices in Britain, we are committed to being the highest-paying supermarket for our colleagues,” Aldi UK and Ireland CEO, Giles Hurley said.

“We are incredibly proud of every single member of Team Aldi, and are pleased to become the first UK supermarket to pay a minimum of £11 per hour to all Store Assistants, exceeding the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended Real Living Wage.”

Aldi has a total of over 40,000 colleagues and more than 970 stores in the UK.

As brilliant as this wage increase is people need to understand the difference in way Aldi run their stores compared to the big 4 retailers. I previously worked for Aldi and in my old Aldi store there was a maximum of 45 staff even at Christmas with the temps and including management . I now work for Tesco and all year round we have over 500 staff before management. Also even in our quietest weeks we take more money than an Aldi does in peak but we have far far greater over heads, larger store/costs so being able to pay our staff the same isn’t really possible to a degree, simple because Tesco is answerable to the city not an CEO or one owner as such.
