H&M has confirmed it will close four of its UK stores citing a “rapid change in customer behaviour”.

The fashion retailer said it has been forced to shut a number of its branches around the world to meet its customers’ needs.

The affected shops include its Burton branch, which closed earlier this month, Hartlepool, Maidenhead and Newport in Isle of Wight.

A spokesperson for H&M UK and Ireland said: “During the last few years, we have seen a rapid change in customer behaviour that we cannot ignore.

“We continuously need to evaluate and develop our business to meet our customers’ needs and offer the best possible shopping experience, whether it’s online or in our physical stores.

“This means that we sometimes need to close stores.”

The fashion retailer launched a cost-cutting programme last year which so far has seen 1,500 staff let go and 336 stores closed worldwide.
