Post-Christmas footfall sees double-digit slump against pre-pandemic levels

// Footfall in the week after Christmas was down 19.7% on pre-pandemic levels, or down 11.9% when adjusted to remove Christmas Day
// However, shopper numbers were up against last year, when Omicron fears were rife

Footfall in the week after Christmas fell 27.7% week on week and was down 19.7% on pre-pandemic levels, according to Springboard.

However, shopper numbers were up 7.2% on the same week last year when fears were rife about the Omicron virus.

The large gap between footfall this year and pre-pandemic is due to the date offset, with the data starting on Christmas Day this year, when shopper numbers are at their lowest.

Over the six days from Boxing Day, footfall was 11.9% down on pre-pandemic levels, and up 16.3% on last year.

Retailers did benefit from a spike in footfall on 27 December which was 36.6% higher than on Boxing Day.

Retail parks saw the greatest uplift, with sales up 63.8%, compared to a 45.4% jump in shopping centres and 19.7% rise on high streets.

Shopper numbers continued to rise each day up until 29 December, before dropping from New Year’s Eve.

There were double digit rises on each day compared to 2021, other than New Year’s Eve, when footfall was just 1.9% higher.
