The supermarket giant wrote to suppliers last week to explain that the new charges would help cover the cost of serving customers online as its digital operations grow and become more complex.
Charged Retail asked experts across the industry whether Tesco is right to impose this fee on suppliers.
“Sometimes as a buyer, you have to defend the indefensible, knowing that what you are saying is ridiculous and undermines your credibility. Welcome the world of a Tesco buyer,” says one expert.
“It sounds like a tin-eared move to replicate Amazon’s business model,” adds one former Tesco category leader.
