Next to close Bradford warehouse, 780 jobs at risk

Next is planning to close its warehouse in Bradford, putting 780 jobs at risk, as it consolidates its returns processing operations.

The retail giant has entered a consultation period with those impacted by the closure of the Toftshaw Lane site.

The retailer said the move was “necessary” as it sought to relocate its operations to a new online fulfilment facility that is being built in South Elmsall in South Yorkshire.

Next said it hopes to accommodate the impacted staff who would like to transfer to one of its other sites, including the depots in Doncaster, Wath-Upon-Dearne, as well as the new South Elmsell warehouse.

However, it acknowledged that some employees would be unable to relocate so redundancies would be likely.

It said the consolidation would help to “enhance its service to customers” by improving stock availability and make the returns process easier for shoppers.

Next added that its Toftshaw Lane warehouse required “significant maintenance and investment over the coming years”, such as replacing the entire roof which would see the site need to close for works to take place.

It expects to close the premises between the beginning of August and end of September next year.
