Poundland to open seven ex-Wilko stores before Christmas

Poundland is set to open seven more stores inside former Wilko units before Christmas.

The discount retailer’s next batch of openings brings the total number of Wilko-to-Poundland conversions to 64 out of the 71 leases it acquired following the chain’s collapse.

The seven converted units include Barnstable, Camberley, Chester, Long Eaton, Retford, Stevenage, and Swindon.

The new shops will also be joined by 22 new and relocated Poundland stores that will be opened across three consecutive Saturdays starting this weekend.

The retailer said the December expansion drive bring shop openings for the quarter to 86, up from the 75 announced last month. It is also the first time the business will unveil 1m sq ft of new retail space in a three-month period.

Poundland managing director Austin Cooke said: “We excitedly continue to open and relocate stores at pace so we can bring our best offer, including all-new clothing, chilled and frozen food to customers, existing and new.

“The monumental effort from our teams continues to amaze me, and it supports jobs and high streets right across Britain.

“That’s 86 stores in 70 days that we’ll have opened successfully, and no one should underestimate the effort and energy that our teams have put into delivering that achievement – I certainly don’t. It’s phenomenal.”
