The Body Shop reignites fight against animal testing

Cosmetics retailer The Body Shop has reignited its fight against animal testing with its long-term partners, Cruelty Free International.

The company is bringing back its campaign 25 years after the UK’s absolute ban on animal testing was passed in 1998.

The ban, which followed The Body Shop and Cruelty Free International’s campaigning on the issue, was reversed in 2019 as the government re-aligned its policy with less stringent EU rules, allowing for the testing of cosmetics ingredients on animals.

The move came despite 71% of the British public supporting the government reducing testing on animals and 17% saying animal testing was an issue of high importance to them, according to YouGov.

To raise awareness of the changes and call for a reinstation of the full ban, the business has launched a limited-edition version of its “Forever Against Animal Testing” t-shirt.

The t-shirt first appeared when the organisations campaigned on the issue during the 90s.

All profits made from the t-shirt sales will go to Cruelty Free International to support their work to bring an end to animal testing, according to the company.

The Body Shop international sustainability, activism and communications director Chris Davis said:

“We and our partners started this fight against animal testing a long time ago, and our resolve is stronger than ever to see it through today.

“We know the British public care passionately about animal rights, and we can’t wait to see people show their support for the campaign by styling a Forever Against Animal Testing t-shirt their own way”.

The t-shirts will be available online from today and on sale in The Body Shop’s flagship Battersea store.
