Amazon has widened its same-day delivery service to over 80 UK towns and cities, including Aberdeen, Plymouth and Middlesbrough.

It comes after the ecommerce giant said the number of products being ordered for same-day delivery had more than doubled since last year.

The update follows Amazon’s latest Prime Day sales period, where it said some of its most popular products ordered by members included Amazon Fire TV sticks in Manchester, hydrating serum in Nottingham and ink cartridges in Swansea.

“We know Prime members love being able to order a huge range of products with fast delivery that they count on, and that’s why we’re continuing to innovate and invest to further accelerate delivery speeds across the country,” it added.

“For example, Amazon announced earlier this year that it is investing more than €700 million in robotics and AI-powered technology in its European fulfilment centre network between 2019 and the end of 2024 to enhance the customer and employee experience.”

It continued: “The new technologies support employees in their roles, providing them with a safer work environment and upskilling opportunities.

“At the same time robotics and AI-powered innovation improve price, selection, and convenience for our customers, while also reducing packaging materials.”

In July, Amazon saw its Prime Day spend in the UK hit a record £633m on its first day (16 July), representing its highest ever daily ecommerce spend for the event.

The figure marked a 9.1% rise compared to sales on the first day of the retail giant’s event last year, which came in at £581m.
