Pets at Home has started selling dog treats made from lab-grown meat in what it claims is a “world first”.
A limited release of Chick Bites from manufacturer Meatly have gone on sale at the pet giant’s Brentford store in west London, The Guardian reported.
The dog treats have been made from plant-based ingredients combined with cultivated meat, produced from a single same of cells taken from one chicken egg.
Meatly said the cells could produce enough meat that is “just as tasty and nutritious as traditional chicken breast” to feed pets “for ever”.
Pets at Home, which has invested in the manufacturer, said it believed it was the first company in the world to sell cultivated meat for pet food.
The retailer’s chief operating officer Anja Madsen said: “This innovation has the potential to significantly reduce the environmental impact of pet food and will be a gamechanger for the industry.”
The UK became the first country in Europe to back cultivated meat for use in pet food last July after Meatly’s produced chicken was approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Animal and Plant Health Agency.
