Waterstones has stopped international orders to the United States after the Trump administration increased import tariffs.

The retailer said on its website that it was unable to accept orders delivering to the US following the news that UK business sending goods stateside would be subject to a 10% tax.

Waterstones pasted a note to its international shipping information page stating: “We regret that we are currently unable to accept or ship orders to the US, while we establish options to be compliant with the new tariffs.”

The bookshop is not the only retailer evaluating its US expansion plans, with M&S chair Archie Norman warning the brand’s Percy Pig’s US invasion could be called to a halt.

Norman described Percy as the retailer’s “gift to America” but told the Retail Technology Show that “we might have to change our minds” as Trump imposes additional taxes on imported goods.

He said the tariffs would not stop the retailer expanding overseas but that the higher tax could push up prices and make them less popular.
