Specsavers is pumping £5m into expanding and upgrading its Vision Labs manufacturing facility in Kidderminster, boosting production capacity and delivering environmental improvements.
The eyewear specialist‘s Worcestershire site, which produces prescription lenses for more than 900 stores across the UK, will see output rise from 140,000 to over 200,000 lenses per week once the project is completed.
The two-year upgrade will introduce new state-of-the-art technology to streamline the manufacturing process, optimise use of space and materials, and meet growing demand across the retailer’s UK business.
Specsavers said the investment will also bring environmental benefits, including reduced water consumption, more efficient electricity use and a lower carbon footprint.
The works will also improve facilities and working environments for the site’s 350 employees.
Lee Timbrell, director of European manufacturing and distribution operations said: “Today’s announcement is an important milestone for Vision Labs and marks an exciting new chapter for the site and its 350-strong team, who work tirelessly to provide the very best service to our stores throughout the UK.
“This investment is a commitment to them, to our customers and to the future of Specsavers in the UK.”
Robert Elliot, director of business engagement and policy at Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, added: “This is a real vote of confidence in the local economy and workforce, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Specsavers as they deliver this exciting next phase of growth.”
