The Works has appointed former Dunelm chief executive Nick Wharton as an independent non-executive director, effective from today (1 August 2025).

As part of the board’s wider succession planning, Wharton will take over as chair of the audit committee following the retailer’s upcoming AGM.

He will succeed Harry Morley, who previously announced plans to step down as senior independent non-executive director.

Wharton, a qualified chartered accountant, brings decades of experience in senior finance and leadership roles across the UK and international consumer industries.

In addition to his tenure as CEO of Dunelm, he has held CFO roles at Pepco Group, Superdry and Halfords. He currently serves on the boards of AG Barr, Oriflame Investment Holding and Mears Group, and has previously been a non-executive director at Mothercare.

The Works chair Steve Bellamy said: “I am pleased to welcome Nick to the Board. Nick has very relevant sector and plc experience, and I am confident that the business will benefit from his expertise as we continue to capitalise on growth opportunities, deliver our strategic priorities and increase shareholder value.”

Wharton added: “This is an exciting time to join The Works – the business has made significant strategic and financial progress in the last year and there is a clear opportunity for further growth in the years ahead.

“I look forward to working alongside the rest of the Board and supporting the management
team to deliver its new ‘Elevating The Works’ strategy.”
