Asda IT chief Matt Kelleher has stepped down from the company, leading to a reshuffle of its senior team.

Kelleher has worked as the supermarket’s SVP, chief digital officer since July 2024.

Asda chairman Allan Leighton told staff that Kelleher, who led the retailer’s Project Future to decouple its system from Walmart, would exit the business “as of today” (1 October), The Grocer reported.

The departure is thought to be “amicable,” with the exec, who was Asda’s first chief digital officer, stepping down to pursue new opportunities.

The supermarket is using the departure to reshuffle some of its headquarters function and reporting lines, as the chairman looks to continue with his turnaround plan.

Chief technology officer Adrian Berry and chief information officer Marcus Shaw are now set to share responsibility for the supermarket’s IT and systems teams.

Additionally, Asda’s online and analytics team, led by Barney Burgess, will be shifted into the customer team, reporting to chief customer officer Rachel Eyre.

The ecommerce team, which is led by David Devaney, will report into George managing director and chief commercial officer for non-food and retail, Liz Evans.

Speaking to The Grocer, an Asda spokesman said: “We can confirm that Matt Kelleher has left Asda today.

“After more than 15 years in senior executive roles at Asda and elsewhere, Matt has decided the time is right to pursue a new direction. We wish him well for the future.”

Last month, Asda named Charlotte Rhodes as its new vice president, own brand, effective from early December.

In June, the grocer also brought back Darren Blackhurst as its chief commercial officer for food.
