M&S and Asda have returned online following the global Microsoft outage.

The groups were among various companies that reported problems with their websites yesterday evening (29 October), according to the BBC.

The technology giant said that some Microsoft 365 users experienced issues and that its Azure cloud computing platform had seen a “degradation of some services”, at 4pm yesterday.

Microsoft explained it was caused by “DNS issues,” which were also behind the Amazon Web Services outage last week.

Microsoft confirmed the initial outage to The Independent, attributing the problems to an “inadvertent configuration change”.

An online statement from M&S last night said: “Thanks for visiting our website! Due to the global Microsoft Azure issue, our website is temporarily unavailable. We are working to restart it as soon as possible, so please check back soon.”

An Asda spokesperson said: “We’d like to thank customers for their understanding while online shopping was unavailable for a short period last night due to a global issue affecting several businesses.

“The issue has now been resolved, and customers can shop online as normal.”

The outage followed various retailers, including M&S, suffering cyber-attacks earlier this year.

It was initially reported that M&S had issued an apology to shoppers in April, after a technical glitch left customers across the UK unable to use contactless payments or click-and-collect services over the Bank holiday weekend.
