Marks & Spencer has named ex-Asda boss Roger Burnley as a new non-executive director.
Burnley will step up to the retailer’s board on 1 December and will also serve on the audit and risk and nomination committees.
The retail veteran served as CEO and chief operating officer of Asda from 2018 to 2021, departing after the grocery giant’s sale to the Issa brothers.
He has also served as Sainsbury’s retail and operations director, and currently sits as a non-executive director of Pets at Home.
Burnley said: “M&S is a much-loved brand which I have always admired as setting the standard in UK retail, and it is a privilege to be joining such an engaged board.
“Much progress has been made through the Reshaping for Growth strategy, but there remains so much opportunity, and I am looking forward to supporting the leadership team to capitalise on that in the years ahead.”
M&S chair Archie Norman added: “Roger brings extensive experience in the food retail industry and supply chain transformation which will be invaluable as we enter the next phase of our plan to reshape M&S for growth.
“He’s a strong addition to the team and I’m delighted to welcome him to the board.”
The appointment comes after M&S named Cos exec Paula Bricks as its new retail director for fashion, home and beauty earlier this month, effective from November.
The business also hired ex-Asos managing director Jag Weatherley as its new transformation director for fashion, home and beauty in September.
