Retail trade union Usdaw has welcomed a move from the Chancellor, which will see a 4.1% pay rise for millions of low-paid workers.

The Chancellor accepted recommendations from the Low Pay Commission (LPC) for low-income workers to be “properly rewarded” for their work

The union has submitted evidence to the LPC asking for an increase in rates to help with the rising cost of living.

General secretary Joanne Thomas said: “Usdaw very much welcomes these significant pay increases for the lowest paid, after years of pay not keeping pace with prices under the Tories.

“This is because Labour changed the Low Pay Commission’s remit so that they now take account of the cost of living. Today’s announcement also demonstrates further progress towards ending rip-off youth rates with higher percentage increases for under-21s.”

Under the new budget proposals, the minimum wage rates will increase in April 2026 to £12.71 an hour for over 21’s, £10.85 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £8 an hour for 16/17 and apprentices.

Thomas continued: “Alongside these minimum wage increases, the Employment Rights Bill will deliver fairness by stopping rogue employers undercutting those who treat their staff properly. When passed, it will give workers security, respect and the decency of an income they can live on.”
