Nexi Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with Google Cloud to develop infrastructure for agentic commerce across Europe.
The partnership will combine Google Cloud’s AI and data capabilities with Nexi’s European payment network and acquiring expertise, with the aim to develop agentic AI that can manage shopping journeys and execute payments on behalf of consumers.
Under the agreement, Nexi will back open-source commerce standards including the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).
These frameworks are designed to allow AI agents to manage the full commerce lifecycle, such as search and product selection, as well as payment.
The companies said the collaboration will enable conversational sales channels, allowing merchants to capture purchase intent at the point it arises, such as during a search query or video recommendation, and convert it directly into an AI-facilitated transaction.
Alongside customer-facing developments, Nexi said it will also use Google Cloud technology to improve operational efficiency including enhancing real-time fraud detection, automating compliance processes and streamlining merchant onboarding.
“As consumer journeys shift toward agentic commerce, trust and security become the primary currencies of the digital economy,” said Google Cloud EMEA president Tara Brady.
“Google Cloud is at the forefront of delivering secure, agentic AI technologies to the financial sector.
“With these capabilities, Nexi will accelerate innovation, optimise transaction workflows, and define the next generation of digital payments for the European market.”
The new partnership follows Google Cloud last month signing a five-year deal with Unilever, in a bid to ramp up its use of AI and reshape how its brands are discovered and shopped.
