Co-op is set to launch 24 new and refurbished stores during its second quarter. It said the openings will include new stores, refurbished shops reopening after “transformative investment”, and further expansion of its franchise estate.

The latest phase of investment follows 18 store launches in the first quarter, taking Co-op’s total number of openings and refurbishments to more than 40 during the first half of 2026.

The stores will span locations across Britain, including Cumbria, Gloucestershire, Kent, London, the Midlands, Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and the Scottish Highlands.

Co-op said the investment forms part of its strategy to create local shops that operate as community hubs, offering food, coffee, payment services, parcel collection and rapid grocery delivery.

Co-op also continuing to expand its franchise operation, which ended 2025 with 65 stores. It now aims to grow this to more than 100 franchise sites during 2026, with new locations planned across university campuses, hospitals and petrol forecourts.

The business said franchise stores allow it to bring ‘Co-op membership benefits to more communities’, while extending its convenience offer into locations with high levels of footfall.

Co-op is also using its store estate to support its quick commerce operation. Around 90 per cent of the UK population now has access to Co-op groceries online through its own shop, as well as delivery partners including Just Eat, Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Online orders are picked from local stores, which Co-op said ensures high street shops benefit from digital demand while providing faster delivery to local customers.

Co-op operations director Kate McCrae said: “We’re investing to create local stores which are more than just a shop, they are a convenient hub contributing to local life and meeting the needs of communities.

“Whether it’s quality food for an evening at home, food and drink on the go, a top-up shop or our wide range of added services, we’re here to serve and support communities, conveniently.

“Local shops are an anchor at the heart of local communities, and we’re moving through 2026 with a strong focus on our members, customers and communities, and a programme designed to enhance Co-op’s presence in high streets and communities across the UK.”

The retailer added that its stores will continue to offer member price savings, soft plastic recycling points and a range of promotions for shoppers.

Co-op said it remains committed to backing British agriculture, with all of its own-brand fresh and frozen meat, including products used in pies, ready meals and sandwiches, sourced from Britain.
