Celebrity collabs seem to be a dime a dozen lately but what makes a hit collab? We take a look at some of the hits and misses.

Hits

Beefeater x Jay Kay (Jamiroquai)

The first campaign on the hits list is from British gin firm Beefeater.

The brand recently unveiled its newest ad for its Beefeater 0.0 which stars British singer-songwriter Jay Kay, co-founder of Jamiroquai. The spot celebrates the 30th anniversary of his hit song Virtual Insanity and see’s him return to the “iconic set”, this time with a Beefeater 0.0 in hand.

This ad makes the list of our top celebrity collabs because of its use of nostalgia. Beefeater uses the anniversary of the hit to combine something new with something old.

In addition, it is beautifully shot.

Depop x Zara Larsson

Online second-hand marketplace teamed up with global superstar Zara Larsson for a new campaign. The pop princess also supplied the retailer with an exclusive edit, made up of 20-30 pieces.

This collaboration is a hit as it utilises its celebrity star. While, sometimes a celebrity can feel shoehorned into a ad, this collaboration felt fresh and authentic. It brings Larsson’s signature style to life, showcasing her creativity while still being true to Depop’s brand messaging.

Redken x Sabrina Carpenter

The last entry in our hits list is the below ad from Redken. It’s our favourite celebrity collab this year as it again utilises its celebrity star.

The ad campaign feels reflect of Carpenter, showcasing her unique brand of humour, and as well as her vintage style.

Misses

Charles Tyrwhitt

Earlier this summer Charles Tyrwhitt launched its global ‘Summer of Sport’ campaign starring all four of its ambassadors; cricketers Joe Root and Stuart Broad, golfer Luke Donald and American baseball player Anthony Volpe.

While there was nothing wrong with this campaign as such, it just didn’t hit for us. It might have been better if we were sports fans.

As it stands it was kind of blended into the noise.

Doritos x Gordon Ramsey x George Russell

Doritos Loaded launched a new global marketing drive starring British chef Gordon Ramsay and Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 driver George Russell.

Gordan Ramsey, George Russell what are you doing here?

While we understand the concept of unusual pairings and collaborations, this one was just a little bit too weird for us.

Casillero del Diablo

Chilean wine brand Casillero del Diablo named British actor Orlando Bloom as its new global ambassador.

This one is a miss because it just didn’t stand out to us. It felt a bit like every other ambassador announcement and didn’t do anything new.
