Footasylum recently launched a new store in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, as it pushed ahead with its investment in physical retail.

The new 4,000 sq ft store, which is based in Cyfarthfa Shopping Park, has led to the creation of 25 new jobs and offers a mix of exclusive and third-party brands to shoppers.

The launch marks the retailer’s fifth store in Wales, and follows a series of recent openings from the footwear business across Manchester Arndale, Glasgow Silverburn and Darlington Cornmill.

“One of the strongest retail destinations in South Wales”

Footasylum has raised its game in recent times. The shoe specialist pulled in record full-year results in July, with sales rising 9.4 per cent to £349.5 million from January 2024 to January 2025.

Its underlying EBITDA also jumped 26 per cent to £28.2 million over the period.

Additionally, the brand secured a £60 million funding boost from HSBC UK in March to accelerate its store expansion plans.

The footwear and apparel company’s retail director Shannon Osman explains that Cyfarthfa Shopping Park comprises “one of the strongest retail destinations in South Wales, attracting shoppers from across Merthyr Tydfil and the surrounding valleys”.

“It offers the accessibility, convenience and footfall that we look for when evaluating new locations as part of our expansion programme,” she says.

“Footasylum has been actively targeting prominent retail destinations where our customers are already shopping, and Cyfarthfa Shopping Park fits that strategy perfectly.”

Footasylum On a personal level, Osman notes that “being from Merthyr” herself means she “knew it would be a great location for Footasylum and would really resonate with the community”.

“The area has a strong affinity with sport, fashion and streetwear culture, and I felt there was a genuine opportunity to bring the Footasylum brand and experience closer to local customers,” she says.

“A proud identity and a strong youth culture”

It’s safe to say that Footasylum’s offering is predominantly centred around a young and trendy target audience.

Its key customer base is Gen Z shoppers, and its core audience is 16 to 24 year olds who “tend to prioritise discretionary spending on aesthetics and image, particularly clothing and footwear,” according to a 2022 report from the brand.

It makes sense then that the retailer is launching in Merthyr Tydfil, which Osman describes as “a town with a proud identity and a strong youth culture”.

“Bringing a major national streetwear retailer into the community reflects the growing confidence retailers have in the region,” she says.

“Personally, there is also a real sense of pride in opening a Footasylum store in my hometown. Being able to bring a brand I am passionate about to a place that means so much to me makes this opening particularly special.”

Despite its youthful target audience, the exec notes that “the appeal of Footasylum has broadened significantly in recent years”.

“The Merthyr store is designed to serve a wide range of customers from across the town and surrounding areas, including families, students and young professionals,” she explains.

“We know there is strong demand in South Wales for the brands and products we offer, and this store allows us to better serve that audience locally.”

Footasylum Where will Footasylum open stores next?

As Footasylum goes from strength to strength, it seems to be able to be selective in terms of where it launches new stores.

Upon announcing its new Merthyr Tydfil shop, the brand claimed that its ongoing expansion strategy was focused on “prominent, high-footfall retail destinations”.

Elaborating on this, Osman says that the brand’s strategy is “centred on opening stores in locations where customers naturally spend their time”.

“That means major shopping centres, retail parks and destinations with strong visitor numbers, excellent accessibility and a complementary mix of retail brands,” she explains.

Although she refrains from specifying any specific locations for future store launches, the exec says it will “continue to evaluate opportunities across the UK” where its sees “strong demand for our brand and where we can deliver the best possible customer experience”.

For now though, the footwear specialist’s new Merthyr Tydfil shop certainly seems like a step in the right direction.
