The northern town of Barnsley is set to receive an £8 million facelift for its town centre, with the aim of reinvigorating its retail sector.
The proposals from Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, alongside its development management partners Queensberry and Turner & Townsend, also forms a central part of the wider regeneration to create the new £130 million mixed-use destination called The Glass Works.
The proposed facelift includes a brand new public square, improvements to the existing space, permanent outdoor market stalls, all of which will invigorate Barnsley’s retail and leisure precincts and connect it with the 700-year-old Barnsley Markets.
The plans are slated to go to public consultation this month.
The Glass Works is located on a 3.8ha site around Cheapside and will provide 46,451sq m of family-led retail and leisure uses. It is scheduled for completion in May 2020.
