Sook shutters stores as business ceases trading

Pop-up operator Sook has closed its portfolio of retail spaces after it failed to raise sufficient funding to continue trading.

The start-up’s founder John Hoyle said in a LinkedIn post that the business had ceased trading as of December 31 “due to a lack of investment”.

Sook, which won Retail Gazette’s DTC Game Changer award in 2022, brought empty retail spaces back to life, allowing brands to open pop-up stores.

The property firm, which had 12 spaces across the UK and one in South Africa, has partnered with brands including Depop and TikTok to open pop-ups.

Founder John Hoyle said in a LinkedIn post: “I’m devastated to announce the closure of Sook yesterday.

“In spite of the extraordinary efforts of our team, growing sales and achieving international scale we were unable to raise sufficient investment to continue in the current environment.

“I’m so proud of all that we achieved and incredibly sad that we cannot continue.”
