Mike Ashley mulls bid for Meadowhall shopping centre

Mike Ashley is eyeing an offer for Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping centre, which could be the retail tycoon’s most significant move into retail property to date.

Frasers Group, the FTSE 100 retail group majority-owned by Ashley, is “one of a handful of parties” to have registered an interest in Meadowhall, an informed source told The Times.

British Land and Norges Bank put the 1.4m sq ft shopping centre up for sale last year with a reported asking price of £750m.

Meadowhall is the fifth largest mall in the UK, with approximately 24m people visiting it each year.

If a deal does go ahead, Meadowhall won’t be Frasers’ first shopping centre acquisition as Mike Ashley has been active in retail property of late.

Back in March, Frasers Group snapped up The Mall shopping centre in Luton for £58m and the Overgate Centre in Dundee for £30 million.

It also bought Junction 32, an outlet shopping centre near Castleford, West Yorkshire, for £50 million.
