New data has shown a 73 per cent year-on-year increase in bulk buy toilet roll sales, as political uncertainty increasingly influences Brits’ spending habits.

Research from online deals retailer Wowcher, has added to the growing trend of Brits buying in bulk in preparation for Brexit as more questions arise around imports, exports, and the availability and cost of everyday staples.

With recent reports of Brits stockpiling everything from food to medication, the data shows just how much people are investing in the basics as a money-saving measure.

Wowcher’s data also shows that between the last quarter of 2018 and the first quarter of 2019, there was an increase in toilet roll purchases by over a quarter (29 per cent), reflecting the increasing political uncertainty this year.

“With so much uncertainty, it’s understandable that consumers want to be sure they have the essentials at home, at a great price,” Wowcher head of marketing Alexis Harrison said.

“In the past year, we’ve seen a significant increase in sales of the most essential home product: toilet roll.

“We don’t see sales slowing down, as British shoppers continue prioritise their spending and ensure they get the best deals on everyday products.”
