Gymshark has announced plans to donate £175,000 to NHS charities which support women’s and children’s hospital services.

The Solihull-based online retailer, which has more than four million followers on its main Instagram account, is encouraging gym-goers now exercising at home to upload a “sweaty selfie” to its social media feeds in order to help reach its target.

For every selfie uploaded with the hashtag #NHSSweatySelfie, the sportswear brand will donate £5 per person to NHS charities supporting services at Birmingham’s Women’s and Children’s Hospitals.

Further donations can also be made via a JustGiving page.

Gymshark founder Ben Francis, whose mother is a nurse, launched the business in 2012 when he was just 19, using his parents’ garage as a base.

“Having watched my mum work as a nurse at the QE (Queen Elizabeth Hospital) in Birmingham all of my life, I know first-hand how incredibly hardworking they are,” he said.

“This is a global situation, that’s well and truly being felt here in the West Midlands.

“We want to play our part in supporting the NHS by donating what we can to the Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital Charity.

“We admire the tireless work everyone is doing there and will do our utmost to support them, as they support us through this difficult time.”
