Marks & Spencer has transformed its grocery team in an effort to win a greater share of spend in the lead up to the festive period.

The retailer has poached Asda’s vice president of non-edible grocery, Lizzy Massey, as the new head of trading for ambient.

Massey has spent the last six years working for Asda and has also held a variety of roles at FMCG group Nestlé.

“Lizzy’s wealth of experience will be a real asset to us and it’s great to have her joining. She will be a brilliant addition to our food leadership group,” an M&S spokesperson said.

M&S has also drafted in wine specialist Bibendum’s buying director, Andrew Shaw, who will join office in April as head of trading for beers, wine and spirits.

Shaw has been at Bibendum for eight years and previously worked in Waitrose’s wine team.

M&S’s relief head of trading for ambient Clare Atack will move into a new role in the commercial leadership team, “which reflects her excellent contribution to M&S Foods”, while Michael Andrews, who has been leading the ambient non-food team, will move to “a new strategic role” as head of commercial operations.

M&S aims to broaden and strengthen its range with the new appointments, particularly after the business suffered from a tough trading environment due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The appointments are also part of the retailer’s transformation strategy, which in food has included the launch of a joint venture with Ocado and the introduction of the ‘ReMarksable value’ range.
