A fall in profits appears to have cost CEO Darren Shapland his job at one of the UK‘s leading flooring retailers Carpetright.

Like-for-like sales were down 2.5 per cent in the UK and 7.6 per cent in Europe for the 10 weeks ended 29 September 2013 after disappointing sales in the Netherlands.

Shapland has announced he is stepping down after only 17 months at the company, and will be replaced by Lord Harris of Peckham who founded the flooring retailer.

Lord Harris said in a statement: “I am disappointed that Darren Shapland, who has made a significant contribution to Carpetright over the last 17 months, is leaving the business, but he does so with our thanks and we wish him well for the future.”

Trading director of Carpetright Graham Harris, who has no relation to the founding family, said he continues to be impressed by the underlying strength of the business.
