Matalan confirms departure of 2 directors

FashionNews

Fashion and homewares retailer Matalan has confirmed today that two of its most senior directors have left the company.

Commercial Director Adrian Mountford, who joined the retailer in 2010 from grocer Sainsbury‘s, and Sourcing Director Margaret Melville, stepped down from their roles in January, though the retailer has denied that the departures were the result of poor trading in the run-up to Christmas.

Last month, Matalan reported that total sales had fallen 1.5 per cent in the five weeks to December 29th 2012, though noted that EBITDA had increased 8.6 per cent to £45.3 million in its third quarter.

It is understood that no replacements are currently being considered for the role as the retailer has a sizeable board of directors who are set to manage responsibility of relevant departments.

Last October, the retailer announced the appointment of former Asda CEO Alan Leighton, who took over as Chairman following positive Q2 results and it is expected that the latest shake-up will further streamline the senior team.

Matalan‘s strategy is unlikely to change as a result of the departures, Retail Gazette understands, though it is set to continue growing its online presence in the months ahead.
