Online retail transactions have surged by more than a quarter in the last two years, according to new data.

Last year, online card spending reached £154 billion in the UK – or £422 million per day on average – the UK Cards Association‘s research shows.

This an increase of 28 per cent since 2014, when online spending stood at £120 billion.

The figure also shows that the UK spends more online per household than any other country, at $5900 (£4607) in 2015 – higher than Norway ($5400), the US ($4500) and Australia ($4000).

The study also found that spending on entertainment made up one in four online card purchases.

Twenty-six per cent of all card spending was online last year, compared to 22 per cent in 2014.

The UK Card Association said this equated to 1.8 billion purchases made online at an average of 150 million a month, up by 38 per cent from 2014.

In addition, almost 40 per cent of travel bookings are paid for online, with flights accounting for 54 per cent of that figure.

Consumers now go online for 23 per cent of all clothing spending, and 67 per cent of concert ticket spending and 61 per cent of cinema, theatre and dance spending is done on the internet.
