South London’s popular Brixton Markets could soon have a new owner in the form of Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct group, according to reports.
The Evening Standard has said that the retail company is reportedly a frontrunner to acquire Brixton Village and Market Row for £30 million.
The precincts, often referred to as Brixton Markets, are home to around 140 retailers and restaurants – most of which are independent or small businesses.
It follows Sports Direct’s purchase of land near the markets in August.
Brixton Markets generates an estimated rental income of £1.3 million per year.
Sports Direct has not yet provided comment on the potential acquisition deal.
The precinct is being sold by property agents GCW and Lewis & Partners on behalf of listed landlord London & Associated Properties.
