Wilko appoints first-ever head of design

Wilko has announced the appointment of its first-ever head of design, with Alexei Cowan hired to take on the newly-created role.

Cowan’s remit will be to establish a dedicated product design capability within Wilko, focusing on trend interpretation and the development of desirable products.

With more than 20 years of experience in developing, designing and launching customer-focused new products, Cowan’s last position was identifying and reporting on trends for the WGSN lifestyle and interior team.

Prior to that, she was group creative director for a lifestyle design group which included brands Perch & Parrow, Gallery Direct and Endon Lighting.

Her previous roles include head of design for Home Retail Group, the former parent company of Argos and Homebase, and senior designer at Next.

As head of design at Wilko, Cowan will report to executive managing director Andrew Moore.

She will join office on December 2.

“Alexei’s appointment will enable us to establish a stronger, more intuitive product focus through improving our customer offer based on insight and substantially reducing development lead times.”
