John Lewis has reportedly revealed that it has only received queries from 19 customers about the retailer ditching its “never knowingly undersold” price match pledge.

The department store chain expected to receive a flurry of angry letters after announcing the new initiative.

Just 19 customers have been in touch since last month, and not all complained, The Telegraph reported.

John Lewis chair Sharon White has had to take the decision since joining the company two years ago.

“We are in the most competitive retail market ever,” she said.

“Being a partnership does not insulate us from having to take the tough decisions.”

Since her role, White has shuttered 16 shops, cut a further 1000 jobs in stores, and launched a value range.

John Lewis and Waitrose are expected to post profits of at least £100 million next week when the group reveals its annual performance.
