Amazon is tapping into augmented reality through a new feature called Virtual Try-On for Shoes in an attempt to attract sneakerheads to its site as it looks to create more immersive experiences for fashion shoppers online.

The new offering allows customers to visualize how a pair of new shoes will look on themselves from multiple angles using their mobile phone’s camera.

The feature for shoes will initially launch in the US and Canada in the Amazon shopping app on iOS.

The experience also allows customers change the colours of their chosen footwear by scrolling through a carousel of options. They can also take a photo and share it through social media.

The online giant says the feature will help brands to better showcase their products while also informing customers’ purchasing decisions.

The launch follows the roll-out of other virtual try-on technology in April as part of an update to its “Made for You” custom clothing service.

Amazon Fashion president Muge Erdirik Dogan said: “Amazon Fashion’s goal is to create innovative experiences that make shopping for fashion online easier and more delightful for customer.

“We’re excited to introduce Virtual Try-On for Shoes, so customers can try on thousands of styles from brands they know and love at their convenience, wherever they are. We look forward to listening and learning from customer feedback as we continue to enhance the experience and expand to more brands and styles.”
