Games Workshop has signed a deal with Amazon to produce films and TV programmes based on its characters.

The company, which is known for its Warhammer franchise, saw its shares rise 14% on Friday. It has not revealed the value for the deal.

Amazon is expected to set about “certain development activities” such as holding talks with writers.

“It is intended that rights will initially be granted to develop the Warhammer 40,000 universe,” the company said.

Games Workshop said the deal was subject to contracts being agreed.

A further announcement is expected to be made “in due course”.

The business rewarded its staff earlier this year for their hard work by sharing an extra £10 million of profits it made over the past 12 months.

The company said in June that sales were up £32 million for the past 12 months to £385 million, just a year before staff had received £13 million through the company’s profit share scheme.
