Asda’s billionaire owners are said to be plotting an £8bn takeover of fast-food giant Subway.

The Issa Brothers are understood to be interested in the restaurant chain, which operates at some of the EG Group’s petrol stations, The Sun reported.

Subway is expected to be an ideal fit for the brothers’ growing empire, which includes Leon and KFC’s biggest franchise.

A source said: “EG Group have felt for a while that Subway treated them the same way as other franchise partners and their massive growth hadn’t been appreciated.

“So what better way to show who’s boss than owning them.”

The EG Group praised its “successful foodservice business” last month as it reported profits rose 1.9% to £1.23bn in the full year to December 31 2022.
