Former Co-op chief executive Steve Murrells has taken the top job at Tesco supplier Hilton Food.

Hilton Food, which supplies meat and ready-to-eat meals to supermarkets, said Murrells will replace Philip Heffer as its chief executive from July 3.

Murrells was CEO of Co-op Group, owner of UK’s seventh-largest supermarket chain, for five years before he stepped down in 2022.

Murrell was previously one of Hilton Food’s first customers and commercial partners at Tesco.

His departure from Co-op saw chief financial officer Shirine Khoury-Haq take helm of the grocer.

Khoury-Haq previously held the role on an interim basis and was the first female to do so after taking over from Murrells last year, who had been at the business for 10 years.
