Burberry names former Chanel diversity head as chief people officer

Burberry has appointed Alexandra McCauley as its new chief people officer, effective 15 November.

McCauley will become responsible for all aspects of the brand’s people strategy on a global basis and will also join the luxury fashion retailer‘s executive committee, reporting directly to chief executive officer Jonathan Akeroyd.

Based in London, McCauley is currently Chanel‘s head of global diversity and inclusion and global people communications and engagement, prior to which she had also held senior HR and labour relations roles at NBCUniversal.

Akeroyd said: “Alex has a wealth of experience in building human and inclusive cultures within creative businesses, and she has a passion for helping people and organisations achieve their highest potential. I am looking forward to working with her to drive our strategy forward and realise our ambitions in this next phase.”

McCauley’s appointment comes as the business continues to reshuffle its leadership team, having recently tapped a range of new executives, including naming McLaren Group exec Kate Ferry as chief financial officer, alongside a new chief supply chain and industrial officer and chief merchandising officer.

Since Akeroyd’s appointment to chief executive last year, the company has been attempting to transform the business through a new strategy, including ousting former creative director Riccardo Tisci, who was later replaced by Daniel Lee.

Last week, Burberry posted “a strong financial performance”, that saw full-year sales soar, boosted by a rebound of its largest market China, following three years of Covid-19 restrictions.
